It gives borders and woodland areas a neat, considered finish, and makes an excellent surface for natural-looking paths and walkways in any setting, from a formal garden to an allotment.
As a mulch it earns its keep in more ways than one. A good layer suppresses weed growth, slows evaporation so soil stays moist for longer, and gives slugs and snails a surface they would rather not cross. It also helps dry out the wet patches that appear in gardens and allotments over winter, and as it slowly breaks down it returns organic matter and long-term nutrition to the soil beneath.
Recommended use: Apply as a surface mulch around established trees, shrubs and border plants, or lay and rake level to form paths and walkways. Keep the woodchip pulled slightly clear of plant stems and tree trunks. Use it on the surface rather than digging it in, and top up as the layer thins over time.
