Adam hosts the Tales From The Potting Bench podcast, where he talks to gardeners from across the community about herbs, TV gardening, allotments and more. His Instagram documents his family’s journey as they build their garden, and he sells garden-based artwork and cards.
He also coined #HonestGardens – the idea that you should share your gardening failures as well as your successes. The gardening community uses it to show off plants and flowers and to share tips, but also to show that gardening is tricky and you won’t always get everything right.
“Gardening came to me from a young age through my mom and nan, but it’s only really as I’ve got older that I can start to appreciate it properly.
“We’re a family of four, so growing sensibly and ethically has always been at the front of my mind.”
Peat-free is the starting point, not the goal.
“Peat-free compost has been the staple for us from the start and enriching that further is only a bonus! Our soil isn’t too bad where we are, but an extra bit of help with nutrients is no bad thing!”
Alongside feeding the soil, he plants for bees and other pollinators.
“I’m really passionate about growing perennials that will come back every year better and better with some proper care and attention.
“But it does require some patience, I’ll tell you that – if you’re new to gardening then try to make time and sit and enjoy your efforts. Being patient and waiting for nature to take its course will give you a greater satisfaction in the end. Sometimes you just have to sit back and literally smell the roses!”
